First, some history, for isn't that what Tennessee is all about?
I have been writing since about 6 years old when I first put together ‘c-a-t’. My first novel was published in 1979 and had 11 books published from 1980 to '95. I also worked on movies and television... but that’s another article.
My husband, Col. Charlie, me and our cockatiel ‘Squeekers’ live in Columbia. We love Tennessee after living 35 years in Florida. I know, we got it wrong, you are supposed to retire from Tennessee and move to Florida but did you see what Hurricane Debby did to St. Petersburg?
When Col. Charlie retired he wanted to move. He was working a management job that required him to work 40-60 hours weeks.
I told him, “Baby, while, I look fabulous in black, I don't want to HAVE to wear black. You are working so hard.” I knew we would have to move out of state where no one knows him in the restaurant trade.
His eyes just lit up, “Let’s go to Texas!” This is where is his GG Grandfather volunteered to serve with the First Texas Calvary during the War of Northern Aggression.
I said, “Tennessee.” Where his family migrated from North Carolina to and where he has tracked two second cousins who live in Columbia.
He said, “Why Tennessee?"
"Well health wise we are sort of on even keel,” I explained. “You are older, so you may pass on twenty years or so.” He scowled at me, but I continued, “I am fat, so I am right up there to have a heart attack and die. If I go first - you are the type no matter how old you are you will pack the car, grab the computer and the bird and you will go home to Texas.”
“I, however, am not a plunger into new territory without someone there to hold my hand. Therefore- I will be stuck where I will be living; hence we are going to Tennessee.”
He said what every wise husband says, "Okay". For if my husband has learned anything in marrying me is the adage, “For a happy life you must have a happy wife.”
So we came. I have a part time job with the Maury County Health Department which I love. A couple years ago I was asked to speak at a church about my testimony. From there I began to get offers to come to speak at libraries, conferences, seminars, civic groups, church groups, even a class at Project Learning. My topics range from Bible topics to beginning writing, to Sci- Fiction and writing to publishing.
So after a year of telling people to write their book, I began…and here we are.
I asked to write for Spirit of Giles because- well I am used to newspaper writing. It’s not that I don't blog- but writing for a paper is a different animal. I also pondered what to write. Should I write to encourage people to write? Should I write about civic things going on?
I could write about food. Or I could write about strange things that happen to people when they are writing their story. I could give advice. Hence at 4 am it came to me... “New Writer in Town”. That sort of opens it up for me to write about anything, don’t you think?
So this concludes my first offering into my life and my love for writing and Tennessee. Let’s just see where it all takes us. As Jean-Luc Picard said in Star Trek Next Generation- “Engage!”
